According to the World Health Organization (WHO), sustainable development is the organizing principle for meeting human development goals while at the same time sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and ecosystem services upon which the economy and society depend. The desired result is a state of society where living conditions and resource use continue to meet human needs without undermining the natural environment and compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. The Agenda includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth - all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
The 17 SDGs are: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action, Life Below Water, Life on Land, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and Partnerships for the Goals.
Achieving the SDGs requires the partnership of governments, private sector, civil society and citizens alike to make the right choices now to improve life, in a sustainable way, for future generations. The goals provide a framework to address significant global challenges, but the extent to which they are achieved will depend on the commitments, resources and actions taken by individual countries and stakeholders.
Some key aspects of the SDGs:
Overall, the SDGs provide an ambitious and comprehensive framework to address the world's most pressing challenges and to ensure a sustainable future for all. Achieving the SDGs will require significant global cooperation, commitment and investment from all stakeholders.
